The University of Saskatchewan’s inaugural Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) day held on Oct. 19, 2021 was a resounding success. Its ground-breaking events featured a superb program, leading scholars, informative discussions, and outstanding attendance. I am proud of the cross-campus support that our EDI policy has received - equity, diversity and inclusion are fundamental to our university community’s ability to move forward, to make progress and be a better place for all of our students, staff, faculty and alumni. This inaugural event set the tone and course for the next phase of this institutional priority - the implementation of the forthcoming EDI Strategy and Action Plan.
I want to express my sincere appreciation to everyone involved in this inaugural event, including the speakers, participants, attendees, and the EDI event planning committee. I look forward to building on the great work and positive outcomes from this year’s event as we continue our commitment and action toward an equitable, diverse and inclusive USask community.
I am pleased to also note that the recordings from the 2021 Equity, Diversity and Inclusion event can be viewed below.

An Intersectional Approach to Community Empowerment and Governance
- Tasnim Jaisee, president, USSU
Tasnim will use an intersectional lens to discuss her lived experiences as a woman of colour with disabilities. She explores challenges and obstacles in her advocacy. She will also discuss the impact of community empowerment. Lastly, she'll share the need for representation in governance. As the current USask Students’ Union (USSU) President, she understands the importance of empowering diverse student perspectives and making space to amplify marginalised identities.
