The Vice-President, University Relations serves as the portfolio’s senior leader, reporting to the president. They have direct oversight of Development, Alumni Relations, Strategic Communications, Huskie Athletics, and the portfolio’s Operations and Services.
As Vice-President, Cheryl Hamelin leads a team dedicated to building a culture of philanthropy, fostering relationships with alumni and the larger community, sharing the stories of our institution and its people, and most recently, the successful completion of the USask’s largest campaign, raising over $571 million, supporting students success, critical research, visionary spaces, and Indigenous achievement.
Cheryl brings a wealth of leadership experience to her role as vice-president that positively impacts the USask’s mission, values, and strategic goals. Prior to joining USask, she served as the Executive Director, Faculty Development, at the University of Calgary (U of C), where she provided direction for advancement staff and activities in twelve of the university’s faculties and schools. She has also held Director of Development roles in the School of Public Policy, the Faculty of Law, the Haskayne School of Business and the Faculty of Social Sciences at the U of C. Prior to this, she served as Executive Director of the RESOLVE campaign, successfully leading a team of senior fundraisers in a $120 million capital campaign to provide homes for homeless and vulnerable Calgarians.
Cheryl holds her professional fundraising accreditation, CFRE. She is a consummate volunteer, serving both her profession and her community in various capacities. She has been actively involved with the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) in Calgary and nationally since the Calgary Chapter's inception, including serving as AFP Calgary and Area's President and as Philanthropy Day Co-chair. In recognition of her contributions and accomplishments, Cheryl was honoured with the organization's Outstanding Fundraising Professional Award.
